Commercial truck accidentrs are a significant public health hazard causing thousands of deaths and injuries each year, with driver fatigue and sleepiness being major causes.

A new study has confirmed previous findings that obesity-driven testing strategies identify commercial truck drivers with a high likelihood of obstructive sleep apnea and suggests that mandating obstructive sleep apnea screenings could reduce the risk of truck crashes.

If a good night’s sleep helps the brain and body perform better, it’s a good guess that sleep problems can cause more than just fatigue. Numerous studies have shown a connection between sleep disorders and medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, and metabolic disorders, including the risk of obesity and diabetes mellitus.

In the November issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, Mayo Clinic researchers outline several interesting associations between sleep disorders and eye disease.

Individuals with diabetes and those whose stomach pouches are larger appear less likely to successfully lose weight after gastric bypass surgery, according to study findings published in the September 2008 issue of Archives of Surgery, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

Gastric bypass is one procedure some people with sleep apnea often consider or undergo, often at the suggestion of a health care provider, as one way to help lose weight, which may health reduce the severity of the person’s apnea.

Here’s information on two new diagnostic products. These two are both sold over-the-counter for people with diabetes.

The FDA recently cleared for marketing two glucose test meters for use in conjunction with hand-held computers. The computer technology allows diabetics to do a better job of tracking and managing their blood sugar levels.
